William Godwin's Diary

Events

The trial of Mr Wooler (1786?–1853) for two Libels against the government generally, and against George Canning and Lord Castlereagh in particular. Wooler was the author and publisher of the radical newspaper, The Black Dwarf. The delivery of the verdict on the first case was imperfect, giving rise to a lack of clarity about the outcome, which effectively became an acquittal. As a result of the second trial, Wooler was acquitted.
