Events

The victory at Navarino Bay of the combined British, French and Russian fleets, under the command of Admiral Sir Edward Codrington, over the Ottoman and Egyption navy was a turning point in the Greek War of Independence. The Turks and Egyptians lost three-quarters of their ships and over 6000 men and were left unable to control the Peloponessos. This was the last major battle of sailing warships.
