After retreating over the mountains of north-west Spain during the winter of 1808-09, British forces were attacked by Marshal Soult's army as they endeavoured to board transports at the port of Corunna. The attack was repulsed but the British commander, Sir John Moore (1761-1809), was hit by French cannon shot and fatally wounded.
