William Godwin's Diary

Events

On 8 May 1788, Louis XVI, held a ‘lit de justice’, to register a number of edicts. The most important of which was involved the formation of a new body to supply the functions of the parlements, which Louis had closed down, prior to the assembling of the Estates General, which had been called for the following year. This body, the cour pleniere, was to have the exclusive right of registering the laws.
