These reports have not been traced, but it was public knowledge that George IV’s health was very poor, partly as a result of his excessive eating, drinking and opium use. Secluded at Windsor castle, in the last year of his life, the king suffered from gout, arteriosclerosis, inflammation of the bladder and, possibly, porphyria.
