Covent Garden theatre was closed to the public for the installation of a new system of gas lighting when gas escaped while the work was being done and came into contact with a lamp, causing an explosion. Mr Fennell and Mr Douglass, who were responsible for managing the gas at the theatre, died by suffocation and several more people suffered severe burns.
