William Godwin's Diary

Events

Funeral procession of Queen Caroline (1768-1821), who died on 7 August 1821. The authorities were determined the procession should pass to the north of the city in order to avoid demonstrations but crowds gathered at Hyde Park Corner, two men were killed in a struggle with the Life Guards and the procession was forced through the city by the crowds. Godwin's entry suggests that he watched the progess of the cortege. Caroline’s coffin was then taken by sea from Harwich to Brunswick, where she was buried beside her father Karl II, duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.
