Following his defeat at Waterloo and his second abdication, Napoleon surrendered to the commander of the English warship Bellerophon at Rochefort, Brittany, on 15 July. Later that year Bellerophon transported Napoleon to the island of St. Helena in the southern Atlantic, where he died in 1821.
