Napoleon escaped from his ten-month exile on the island of Elba, off the Italian Mediterranean coast, and landed with 600 men on the south coast of France. He began marching through the Alps and towards Paris, collecting an army to challenge the restored Bourbon monarchy under Louis XVIII.
