Genoa was induced to vote for its annexation into the French Republic. Cobbett’s Political Register, 29 June 1805, reports that on 1 June there was an extraordinary meeting of the Ligurian Senate, during which the Genoese Senate‘formally declared for an union with the French empire’ and ‘resolved to submit it to the approbation of the people’. The people voted in favour of union and the Doge of Genoa formally requested union with France on 4 June from Napoleon at Milan.
