Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) was defeated the French navy in Egypt in Aboukir Bay, twenty miles outside of Alexandria. Nelson's success halted Napoleon's designs on British India and moved the Royal Navy to a position of dominance in the Mediterranean for the rest of the war.
