William Godwin's Diary

Events

James Harris, first earl of Malmesbury (1746–1820), was a senior diplomat. He was sent by the Pitt government to secure peace with France in October 1796, but he was recalled home in December as a failure, largely due to his inability to deal with the inflexibility of the French Republican negotiators. He returned to Lille in 1797, but again failed to achieve any success.
