The Habsburg-held fortress of Luxembourg City was besieged by France from 1794 until June 1795, during the Revolutionary Wars. After more than seven months, the fortress was forced to surrender on 7 June 1795, despite France's failure to breach the renowned walls of the city. A result of the capture of Luxembourg was the annexation of the Southern Netherlands by France on 1 October 1795.
