William Godwin's Diary

Events

This may refer to Priestley's response to a letter titled 'Remarks on Dr. Priestley and Mr. T. Paine', printed in the St. James's Chronicle or the British Evening Post, 18 October 1791, and attributed to 'Oedipus'. The writer felt the 'destruction of the bibliotheque choisie at Fairhill' was 'hardly a national loss', instead being poetic justice for Priestley's efforts to inflame the mob against the government.
