William Godwin's Diary

Events

Prince William (1765-1837, from 1830 William IV) was the third son of George III and Queen Charlotte. During the 1780s he had built up significant debts and he pressed for a Dukedom and Parliamentary grant, even threatening to stand as a parliamentary candidate for Totnes to embarrass his father into agreeing. To avoid this, on 16th May George III nominated William for the 5th creation of the Duke of Clarence. His dukedom also comprehended St Andrews as well as becoming the Earl of Munster. The Times, 8 June 1789 records the Establishment of the Duke of Clarence and his household at St James’s as of 1 June.
