Events

Turkey had initiated the Russo-Turkish War (1787-92) in August 1787 in an attempt to regain land lost to Russia in previous conflict. The capture of Oczakow by Prince Grigori Potemkin, Catherine II’s Field Marshall, followed a lengthy siege in freezing temperatures and resulted in significant loss of life.
