William Godwin's Diary

Events

This concerns an episode reported in the Morning Chronicle for 21 April 1795: ‘Mr Godwin, the Author of “Political Justice,” was rode over by a man on horseback in Oxford Street, and received a violent contusion in his face, which was also much cut; we are happy, however, to hear that no dangerous consequences are apprehended’. J. Barrell, The Spirit of Despotism: Invasions of Privacy in the 1790s (Oxford, 2006), p. 16, who points to Corinne Wager who discovered this snippet. The Morning Chronicle dates the incident to Saturday 18 April, not Sunday 19 April, as does the Courier and Evening Gazette.
