The ‘Swiftsure’ was a Steam Packet running between St Katherine’s dock, Sheerness, Southend-on-Sea and Gravesend. The nature of Godwin’s visit is unclear and it does not seem to be an occasion on which Mary Jane Godwin is not at home.
