William Godwin's Diary

Events

On 26 November the Morning Chronicle reported that Don Miguel, ruler of Portugal and responsible for a campaign of repression against opposition and sedition, had an accident while driving a carriage and had broken his right thigh - the date of the report was 10 November. (The Examiner for 30 November suggested that Don Miguel drove his subjects and his mules in like manner). The paper reported that various reports of the King’s health were in circulation, some playing down the incident, others suggesting that he was seriously ill. He survived to be overthrown by his brother in 1834 and sent into exile.
