William Godwin's Diary

Events

Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Jane 'Clair' Clairmont, and Percy Bysshe Shelley left London for the continent. The were pursued by Mary Jane Godwin who encountered them in Calais, where she spoke with Jane. They continued on their way to Paris and Mary Jane returned to London. The runaways returned to London seven weeks later and set up house in Somers Town, although Shelley was frequently obliged to be away from home as he dodged creditors.
