William Godwin's Diary

Events

The ‘indenture’ on 1 November most likely refers to Charles Clairmont’s contract of apprenticeship to Archibald Constable in Edinburgh. It is not clear whether this is drawn up by Gatty, but after their meeting M Smith and Elsten visit. The following day Elsten visits again with M Smith and James Smith, there is a visit to the Guildhall and then Elsten is mentioned again regarding the Exchange. These are the only times Elsten appears in the Diary and it seems likely that the contacts are in relation to the formalities of Charles Clairmont’s apprenticeship and to the registration of the contract. On the 3 November the family go to watch Charles set out on a boat to Edinburgh to commence his apprenticeship.
