William Godwin's Diary

Events

The entry probably registers Godwin’s disappointment at the casting of Robert William Elliston (1774-1831) in the lead role of his play Faulkener. He had tried to interest the young actor William Betty (1791-1874) for what was a young man’s role. Elliston then called on Godwin to read the part. He also heard Mrs Siddons read. His later entries of disappointment with reference to Elliston may well refer to his performance in rehearsal. Faulkener was rehearsed through December with three public performances on 16, 17, and 18 December before it closed. On the morning after the first performance he rose at five to rewrite, and he rewrote parts again the following morning.
