William Godwin's Diary

Events

In January 1803 Godwin consulted the Patent Rolls at the Tower, probably with reference to his work on Chaucer. He visited in February and in June (in the latter case to see the menagerie - a popular entertainment). He also visited five times in July and August, and again in September. It seems likely that the Tower would have been a scene of considerable military activity and public interest following the declaration of war with France.
