William Godwin's Diary

Events

This entry has been thought to refer to a propsal of marriage to Amelia Alderson but St Clair has argued, convincingly, that it is more likely to have been a proposal to help save Robert Merry from his debtors (see 8 July 1796). St Clair suggests that Amelia is in London, but the appearance of 'A' in the entry for 10 July suggests otherwise, without this meaning that Godwin then proposes – not least because it seems possible that he is using the initial 'A' for Amelia and 'Alderson' for her father.
