Following his sentence of transportation for sedition after being tried in Edinburgh Joseph Gerald (1763-1796) was sent to Newgate prison until October 1794 and then to the New Compter, Giltspur Street, London. On 2 May 1795 he was removed, to Gosport, to the convict ship Sovereign.
