Events

The duke of Wellington (1769–1852) defends the king’s speech and its support for the king of Holland despite the popular revolt against the union of the Netherlands and Belgium. The king had called the states general and had sought to meet the concerns of those involved, but the Belgium clamour for independence from the Netherlands was strong and was eventually agreed, with the support of the French.
