William Godwin's Diary

Events

Following a clash with the ‘ministry of all the talents’ over the issue of Catholic emancipation, George III asked William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, third duke of Portland (1738–1809), to accept the position as first lord of the Treasury. Portland was ill and aged and left much of the business to Spencer Perceval (1762–1812) who succeeded him in office in September 1809.
