Following Pitt’s (1759–1806) falling out with George III over the issue of Catholic emancipation (allowing the admission of Irish Roman Catholics to the Westminster parliament) and his resignation, Henry Addington (1757-1844) was appointed as Chancellor of the Exchequer, and thus first minister of the government.
