William Godwin's Diary

Events

Following encouraging noises by William Wentworth Fitzwilliam, second Earl Fitzwilliam in the peerage of Great Britain, fourth Earl Fitzwilliam in the peerage of Ireland (1748–1833) and the new viceroy to Ireland in 1794, hopes for Catholic emancipation were raised. Fitzwilliam was recalled at the beginning of 1795 and Henry Grattan’s (1746-1820) motion for reform which he was seen as supporting was defeated.
