William Godwin's Diary

The debate on the abolition of the slave trade. Three votes were taken: the first on the motion for adjournment, with the chair being given leave to bring a bill, was defeated; the second on a motion by Henry Dundas first Viscount Melville (1742–1811) to insert the word ‘gradually’ in the motion was passed; and the third, the substantive amended motion that the slave trade be gradually abolished, was passed by a majority of 145.
