Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751-1816) moved that several petitions demanding the repeal or alteration in the Bill for laying duties on tobacco be considered by a committee of the whole House. The prime minister, William Pitt (1759–1806), declared himself not to oppose the motion and the motion was passed.
