Sion College was founded in 1626 as a result of a bequest left by Dr Thomas White (1550-1624). The college’s objectives were to shelter the poor, supply materials to students, and ‘assemble the clergy for ‘converse’ grave and sociable’. See E.H. Pearce, Sion College and Library (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1913).
