William Godwin's Diary

Events

Godwin had likely gone to see John Bryant Lane’s (1788 – 1868) large-scale picture of The Vision of Joseph. Lane would not allow viewings of the work in progress, and after he unveiled it in Rome both artist and painting were expelled by papal authorities.

See DNB, and for a letter from Godwin’s friend James Northcote regarding Lane’s painting, see The Times, 21 June 1828. For a critical review, see The Times, 7 June 1828.
