William Godwin's Diary

Events

William Hogarth (1697–1764) was a British painter and engraver who secured his reputation with ‘modern moralizing subjects’. In 1814 the British Institution exhibited the Marriage a-la-mode paintings. The exhibition, studied by William Hazlitt, was, according to the DNB, a starting point of a posthumous revival of interest in Hogarth as a painter rather than an engraver.
