William Godwin's Diary

Charles Townley (1737–1805) was a collector and antiquarian whose private collection containing antique statues, busts, and marbles became one of the sights of London. Visitors could apply to his residence for information concerning opening hours and were freely admitted to view the collection either at their leisure. Johan Zoffany featured Townley's library at Park Street in a 1783 painting, in which the collector, his friends, and an array of sculptures (including the marble bust of 'Clytie') are showcased.
